Kristin's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Health & Equity
Watch a Documentary About Equity, Gender, Health, or Peace
SDG 3, 5, 10, 16
I will watch 2 documentaries about equity, gender, health, or peace.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG 6
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG 7
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Education & Livelihood
WSP - Climate Solutions Plan and Accelerator Course
Read WSP’s Climate Transition Plan, which details how we plan to reduce GHG emissions. We began implementation of our Low-Carbon Supplier Engagement Plan in January. Learn more about it by listening to our supplier kickoff webinar. Increase your climate literacy, take the 2-part Climate Solutions Accelerator Course on the WSP My Learning Platform.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Climate & Ecosystems
WSP - Electrify & Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
Whether you rent or own, sign up with YellowTin to understand costs, savings and incentives for everything needed to transition to an all-electric home and car. Us the link below to register and get these one time action points.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG 13
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate & Ecosystems
WSP - Emerge Program
Spend 15 minutes learning about the Emerge Program at WSP. Emerge is WSP's strategic alliance program that seeks early-stage companies with novel solutions as strategic partners. Partners get access to in-house subject matter experts, an opportunity to pilot their products/technologies with WSP during the evaluation phase and have access to our client base. Emerge propels our partners by accelerating the product/technology adoption. Having recently launched our 4th cohort, Emerge has accelerated a number of companies whose mission aligns with UN SDGs. • Olokun Minerals • ecoSPEARS • PLAEX Building Systems
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 2 documentaries about climate change.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 20 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Health & Equity
Make Cleaning Products
SDG 3
I will make a few homemade cleaning products.
Health & Equity
Donate Food
SDG 3, 10
I will find out what food programs are in my area and donate food and/or other items that they request.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG 15
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 20 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG 11
For an upcoming vacation, I will spend 60 minutes planning out a staycation in my region. For reference, one several hour flight releases the equivalent of nearly 14% of the annual emissions from a car.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy do you donate food? How does it connect to your values?
Kristin Uber 4/13/2023 1:28 PMbecause it's the right thing to do... no kids, elderly, disabled, or adults should have to go hungry. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Kristin Uber 4/13/2023 1:27 PMSo we have food as well as other animals/insects/etc. And, heck, they're nice to look at and feels good to know you're helping. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWith 5-minute or less showers reducing your water footprint, what do you plan to add next to your water conservation habits?
Kristin Uber 4/13/2023 10:12 AMNot sure as I do conserve in other areas. I'm about to start this years garden, so many put a timer on how long I'm watering (we have a well) to see if I can reduce that without impacting the plants. I use a hose, no drip watering, as I rent. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Kristin Uber 4/13/2023 10:10 AMa simple recipe: scrambled eggs (from free range chickens at homestead next door), some nutritional yeast & coconut aminos, and green beans. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsDo you think YellowTin will be useful?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?
Kristin Uber 4/12/2023 11:38 AMsimpler than I imagined and I appreciate knowing exactly what's in them now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Kristin Uber 4/11/2023 7:45 AMhad never heard of virtual water before, and shocked at how much water some things take... like dog food! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon footprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Kristin Uber 4/11/2023 7:36 AMI was surprised by my carbon results.... and as I rent and have a car that's paid off, there is little I can do on some of the bigger offenders. When the car reaches end of life, I can make a better choice... and same goes for if I'm able to purchase a home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Kristin Uber 4/06/2023 1:23 PMParadise Lost and Earthstorm: Tornados, Volcanos, Earthquakes, and Hurricanes. Interesting, well balanced with visuals, scientific information, as well as the personal side and impact of these types of events. Learned of the importance of taking steps to stop and reverse damage to the planet. Knew that, but these films provided more inspiration.
