REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was one nonprofit organization that was exciting to learn about?
Seth Valverde 4/30/2023 11:10 AMThe nonprofit I connected with was the Moro Moro Scholarship fund, which my family helps run. My grandfather started it to help people in his poor rural village attend University. Many of the people that went through this program helped reinvest their skills and education in their home communities to help raise other people up out of poverty as well! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy do you donate food? How does it connect to your values?
Seth Valverde 4/25/2023 3:38 PMI donate because there are people who still need their basic needs met, and I feel an obligation to help because I am able to. I am a believer in the philisophical concept of Effective Altruism, and I think we should do whatever we can to help those who need it the most.-

Seth Valverde 4/23/2023 10:31 AMI researched installing solar panels in Illinois. According to energysage.com, the net 20 year savings are $21,564 – $29,175 in McLean county, not including the 30 percent federal investment tax credit. The initial investment is $12,920 – $17,480, which can make it difficult for some people, but it's much more accessible than it used to be in the past. There are some houses in my neighborhood with solar panels on their roofs, and apparently Illinois has very good rebates and incentives compared to other states. Solar panels are definitely a viable option if you can afford the initial investment, because it will save you money in the long term, and it's also good for the environment. Plus, if there's a complete societal collapse and/or zombie apocalypse, you can still have electricity!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Seth Valverde 4/17/2023 5:24 PMI watched many of the videos on the Water.org youtube channel, founded by Matt Damon. It's an extremely efficient nonprofit, with a 95% transparency rating from Charity navigator, and they have helped provide water to 52 million people. They help get water to people in India, Mexico, Uganda, Brazil, Peru, Bangladesh, Philippines, Indonesia, Tanzania, Cambodia, and Kenya. Water is one of, if not the most basic human need, and 771 million people lack access to clean water. I think this organization is doing incredible things to help people access the most important basic needs.-
