Tim's actions
Climate & Ecosystems
Drive Less
SDG 13
To reduce CO2 emissions each day, I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Economy & Communities
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
SDG 7
I will contact my energy company to find out how to sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Economy & Communities
Analyze Your Utility Bills
SDG 7
I spend 3 minutes analyzing my recent utility bills, which might include electricity, gas, or water to see what my current usage is and determine if I can reduce my energy and water use.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 1 documentaries about climate change.
Education & Livelihood
ENGAGE WITH CLIENTS
I will research my client’s sustainability goals and actions and work with my account team to brainstorm ways Slalom can help.
Education & Livelihood
Try Carpooling
SDG 11
I will commute by carpool 2 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Basic Needs & Security
Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
I will try a new vegan or vegetarian recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.
Education & Livelihood
Stay on the Ground
SDG 11
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally). As an example, a plane from New York to Los Angeles (~2,450 miles) generates about 65 tons of carbon dioxide.
Climate & Ecosystems
LEARN ABOUT SLALOM’S IMPACT
I will spend 5 minutes per day learning about Slalom’s impact and environmental action by reading the 2021 Impact Report and viewing resources on the Earth Month SharePoint page.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Tim Van Liew 4/11/2023 4:14 PMWe decided to travel locally for Spring Break, vacationing in Vancouver, BC instead of flying elsewhere. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!
Tim Van Liew 4/05/2023 1:22 PMI technically didn't make this, but I enjoyed it! Today, in the Seattle Office, we enjoyed lunch procured from Veggie Grill. I tried the Crispy "Chick'n" Caeser Wrap, the Super Greens and Quinoa Salad with Mango dressing, and the Mac n' Vegan "Cheese". I would consider ordering these plant-based options again. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Tim Van Liew 4/05/2023 1:16 PMIn the past, many of the jobs I have worked either required that I drive as part of my daily duties, or had schedules that didn't align with available bus schedules. I am enjoying the flexibility of both working from home to reduce overall commuting and time in the car, and also an office conveniently located on a major bus line allowing me to take the bus to and from the office when needed. While I had a desire to use public transportation in the past, now I really can! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodList some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Tim Van Liew 4/05/2023 1:12 PMI regularly Work from Work on Wednesdays. I commute with my daughter to her school, then park nearby and take the bus into and back from work. I am engaging my neighbor, who works for a different company in the same building, into dialogue about commuting with us if his schedule aligns. It's a small step, but a good one! -
Tim Van Liew 4/04/2023 2:58 PMJust finished watching Dr. Michael Hoffman present during the Our Changing Menu – Climate Change and its Effect on Food event. Great information, well presented, and we didn't have to travel to get any of it! I'm hungry now, though. :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
Tim Van Liew 4/03/2023 11:28 AMDesert Seas. I watched this with my wife and we were fascinated with the juxtaposition of the two seas alongside the Arabian peninsula. There is much to be learned about the adaptations of the creatures in the Arabian Gulf Sea that put up with higher temperatures and have responded to oil spills, but also from the life experiences of those in the high salinity of the Dead Sea which are provided with little nutrition. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the clean energy shift?
Tim Van Liew 4/03/2023 9:03 AMMove to Seattle!
Over 80% of the power we deliver is generated from clean, carbon-free hydroelectricity. In a typical year, about 40% of our power comes from our fully owned hydroelectric projects on the Skagit and Pend Oreille Rivers. The remaining power is generated from a mix of power sources purchased from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) and other renewable sources.
*City Light does not have coal or natural gas resources in its power supply portfolio.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Tim Van Liew 4/03/2023 8:43 AMI learned that while my electricity usage this past cycle was only up .079K over the previous year, rates have gone up and my charges were up nearly $20! We tried something new this year, which was keeping our heat set at a steady comfortable temperature rather than cycling up and down throughout the day to save on the extra energy required to heat a cold space.
