Climate & Ecosystems
Plant a Tree
SDG 15
On average, a tree absorbs 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of carbon dioxide yearly during the first 20 years. To do my part, I will plant 2 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Climate & Ecosystems
Watch a Documentary About Climate Change or Nature
SDG 13, 14, 15
I will watch 1 documentaries about climate change.
Climate & Ecosystems
Explore My Area
SDG 14, 15
Each day, I will spend 10 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Climate & Ecosystems
Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening
SDG 14, 15
Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Economy & Communities
Watch a Documentary About Economy, Energy, or Industry
SDG 7, 9, 12
I will watch 1 documentaries about economy, energy, or industry.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG 3
I will replace 20 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Education & Livelihood
Research Impact Investing
SDG 8
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing or my current investment portfolio to determine if they align with my values.
Education & Livelihood
Host or Join a Cleanup Event
SDG 11, 17
Within my community at home or work, I will organize or attend a local cleanup event.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG 2
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG 6
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG 3
I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Joe Walter 4/27/2023 6:45 AMWe put in 4 mulch bed "islands" in the yard with some native species trees and shrubs purchased from a local land preservation organization that does a spring native plant sale each year! We have bought from them several times over the last 3 years. It is a great way to incorporate native species of plants that will attract bees, birds and wildlife and be good for the ecosystem. We also use rain barrels to collect rainwater runoff from the house, and water the veg garden and beds with that water instead of water from the spigot. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Joe Walter 4/07/2023 1:25 PMI really like meat, so this would be a tough goal for me! While I cannot commit to eliminating meat, I can try to reduce the amount I consume. I like fish, but my wife does not. I make it sometimes when she is away, and I always try to buy sustainably caught seafood. Also, another thought is if I will eat meat I can try to source it locally from farms in my area and not buy it through the normal processing chain via the grocery store, or look for locally produced meats. This could mean less processing? Not sure. Thoughts are appreciated. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Joe Walter 4/05/2023 3:27 PMI try to be mindful of food intake, exercise, and the outdoors. I have started practicing some yoga stretching in addition to exercising and working out. I use stretching and some yoga as meditation time and also listen to soothing music when I do this, trying to calm and center myself. It seems to help with stress, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Joe Walter 4/05/2023 3:24 PMImplications could include a lack of health benefits from fresh air, sunshine (vitamin D), and exercise. Too much screen time is proven to negatively effect eyesight as well as contribute to other issues. Getting outdoors is most often a benefit, unless you live in areas where pollution or outdoor air quality is not good.
