QUESTION
Economy & Communities
What was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?
Not sure where you live but in Michigan we have a new way for the Energy companies to gain and even bigger profit for their services. OK first I do not agree a human service such as utilities company should not be a FOR PROFIT company. They have PEAK hours for charging us. Of course it is when seniors are up and about and when kids are getting out of school. I used the same watts in March as in April and my bill is $25.00 higher. So now I have the clock post to stop me from washing dish, clothes, the car, running vacuum, my heat or my air on high during this time. I had already sign up for the automatic shutdown on air if grid overloads. That was not enough this next measure is going to hurt the families who struggle to pay this bill in the first place.
We as a generation of TV, tablets, Laptops, Desktops watchers have become less social. I know we are so busy on social media but sadly when someone is right in front of us we became so shy or distent that no words are exchanged. Also it must be a strain on our eyes currently our posture is bad. Neck & back aches from looking down at phone or looking up for wall mounts screens. Get to know your family, friends and at least one day a week. Just in Nature. My day is Sunday before 6pm. No electronics. I just starting someone were and yes rainy days count too. Its my book ready family time.
I was blessed my mother and aunt when to Sewing Finishing School which made both of them qualify to be professional taylors. I on the other hand was taught to mend and that is all I can do. Sewing is not my thing. You need lots of patience. But if you have a button that came off or a sock with a whole in it. I'm your person! Its and wonderful skill to have not many people have it.
I volunteered for a new to me charity this month. Pope Francis Center the mission:
Feeding. Serving. Empowering.
Located in the heart of downtown Detroit, Pope Francis Center provides vital services to individuals experiencing homelessness. On an average day, we welcome nearly 200 guests and provide them with nutritious meals, showers, laundry, and access to doctors, dentists, lawyers, and housing providers through our free clinics. We've been serving Detroit’s most vulnerable citizens since 1990, and we’re committed to eradicating chronic homelessness in our city. As citizens of this earth when do we and I mean all of us take into account we are our brother's keeper? Huge support is needed by the 1% wealth and the 90% that may be in need somehow. Wealth is measured in different ways. Some say if you have a home, car and bank account (no matter the balance) you are wealthier than most people. Let's not compare but make an effort to lift up and support others. I only suggesting you do your part. I promise to do mine.
Natural cleaning products are the best. Yes, they are more expense it the store. No, I did not make my own. I Tried but entire house smelled like vingear! Not pleasant. So, I've made a choice to support my favorite "Green" cleaning company product. "Seventh Generation"
I have not started this club. First is not easy to host a book club and very few people read books on climate. Maybe an article club! Short stories is all I read. This will be a task I'm afraid I'm not going to be good at.
What did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?
I watched a film on Colorado River. How they change the flow of the river to support surrounding areas. Due to counties had little of no water passing thru but the fish that are still swimming up stream and the water's current is not allowing them to get to nesting area. We think we have issue. This is an issue.
I joined a Gratitude Community Group. Yes, your personal thoughts are private. The mission is to write down and review weekly your post. Surprising to me I've been steady about this daily task. Also, daily the group leader sends an uplifting quote from different authors. https://m.community.com on youtube Brandi Mechele Happiness Coach. Its free to join private sessions have a fee. Invest in yourself.
I am planning to attend an art show in Grand Rapids, MI as my college son has an art show with his Visual Arts classmates. Art inspires and offers a means to appreciate others talents and perspectives. Looking forward to this event to see my son's view thru art as well as the others.
I moved to this city 5 years ago and every spring summer we received and booklet of all the events for the reason. Difference is this year I placed events on in my phone so I can enjoy the garden flea market sell. The flower garden tour and the farm pet zoo. All of them are with 5 miles of my home. In case you were thinking why I haven't gone before. Well, I told you early I drive pass places to do things! This time I will stop and enjoy.
Let me know how your challenge is coming along. The one is going great for me. I selected actions I'm really making an effort to complete. Living on a purpose gives great rewards. Physically, mentally and emotionally. I fell rested, happy and glad to have a positive focus. Not sure how you feel. I can only talk for me. Going to work, church and home and I love them all is not fulfilling enough for me. When I'm fully engaged in this life the reward is huge. Tell me your story.
