In general, we’ve been trying to eat lower down on the food chain and buy less “throw away” items. With three children it’s been interesting to see how influenced they are by their larger social network, which may lead them to things and actions that have a higher carbon footprint. I am trying to use my influence wisely!

It seems to be the season for yellow flowers. These are yellow wood violets that I found.

I always look forward to seeing Leatherwood blooming each spring. This native deciduous shrub has small trumpet-shaped flowers that attract flower flies and bumble bees.

What did you watch, and what was the most important thing you learned in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of climate change and Earth Month?

I watched "The Crime of the Century" about the Sackler family, Purdu Pharma and the opioid crisis. While not specifically about climate, it clearly shows how money connects with power and influence in our country. Despite the fact that government officials could clearly see the devastation wrought by the burgeoning opioid crisis, they failed to act for fear of alienating large donors from the pharmaceutical industry. In the same way, they are failing to take appropriate actions to curtail fossil fuels now because the companies are massive donors to their campaigns.
