I've added a Team Goal of Completing the Greener Apron Course, and signing up for the Greener Apron Virtual Benevity Volunteer event before end of month! Remember, every volunteer's time will be partner matched to The Arbor Day Foundation and they will plant 20 trees per partner completion!

What ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?

So I've been seeing this trend on ground clover being drought resistant, and easy to maintain. When we had a pretty solid drought late last year I lost much of my grass. Instead of planting it, I decided to re-seed it with white clover. Needless to say it's growing within a few days and it looks plush and so green! Clover is not only easy on the watering, the blooms also are great for bees, and they enrich the soil they are in!

Why is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?

I grew up in the Northeast, and what we considered honorable recognition of native and indigenous peoples is everywhere. Grew up on Lake Ronkonkoma, sister lives in Massapequa even now, and our VERY large school district is named Sachem (Merrimac and Seneca for me - go flaming arrows!). I was also an archaeologist in the area for several years before moving away, and have worked on many colonial and pre-colonial sites. Anyway, I think it is important to revisit some of our assumptions - and that's what I did this week. NYS recently passed a law which moves to remove all references that are familiar to me. Rename the district, schools, sports teams, etc. Easy decision in many cases (i.e. redmen), to me not as easy in others (Sachem), but ultimately I think the most important voice MUST be native and indigenous people and regardless of what the intent of some of these names is - it's their decision to make and we should honor that.

Thanks for sharing Ken! Amazing to hear you were previously an archaeologist! As for renaming of locations, venues, buildings I can't agree more. The choice should be the native and indigenous people.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?

Taking the kids (11/3) out for a walk almost every day is critical for exercise, family time, and appreciation of the outdoors. They also like to go to different places! We've recently discovered a guided Marsh experience nearby, and that didn't compare to a culvert where there are always egrets nearby.

I love taking my kids out. We go daily on walks, and we have such an abundant bird population here in South Texas we've turned each of our kids (17,13,7) into avid bird watchers. Growing up I never thought I would enjoy identifying birds like I do now with my wife. It's amazing just exploring the area your in, and it truly creates great connective moments between your family and yourself.

The family and I tore out about 200 sqft of monoculture grass, along with some invasive decorative shrubbery, and planted 12 different local species (so far) of flowering plants and trees.

I believe it gives you more understanding of the world your choices are impacting. My spouse and I visited a popular Bird park down here. We saw Cardinals, Great Kiskadees, and tons of other birds like a Scissor Tailed Flycatcher. We also saw waste, caused by humans, in such a beautiful area.

Huge garden event in support of the Rise Inclusion School yesterday! We utilized grounds from our stores to prep the new soil for the gardens, seeded, and educated the students and staff on the work we do and why!
