New habit I have adopted around shopping for new items is to first assess if the company I am buying from meets certain standards and requirements for sustainability and diversity, equity and inclusion (e.g., B Corp certification, Regenerative Organic certification, Fair Trade certification, or items meet industry standards such as Bluesign). I also check to see if the company offers repairs or replacement of broken parts (E.g., Patagonia fixes garments, Travel Pro replaces broken parts on your suitcase, etc.). Additionally, I look for warranties that also offer replacement of parts so I don't have to throw out the item I bought, before it's really lived a long life. Lastly, more and more companies are considering the life of the product from origin of materials to the end of the life of product. Buying from companies that recycle or reuse parts of the product at the end of its life (once you've retired it), contributes to the further growth of the circular economy. If we can, we should support those companies!
