Make Cleaning Products

SDG 3

I will make a few homemade cleaning products.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate & Ecosystems

Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening

SDG 14, 15

Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate & Ecosystems

Support Local Pollinators

SDG 15

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will plant pollinator-friendly plants in my area to support local pollinators.

Why did I join? Why not? It's my planet as well as it is anybody else's. Let's all take responsibility for our actions. Together we can make a difference.

This whole spring & summer I'll be focusing on creating more eco- friendly areas of my gardens and yard. During lunch today I planted 4 different native ferns in my island. Who knew there were so many varieties of ferns! I also planted a Bleeding Heart plant to attract more bees & butterflies.

I've been doing so much research on natural ways to deal with garden pests. I had always heard that used coffee grounds were good for gardening but never knew why until now. Did you know that used coffee grounds add nutrients as well as kill slugs? I stopped into a Starbucks the other day and picked up their used coffee grounds for the day to add to my garden immediately.
I also found that Hydrogen Peroxide kills a variety of pests in all life stages, kills soil fungus, root rot and is great for disinfecting your garden tools and pots. You can even soak your seeds in hydrogen peroxide for an extra boost to get them off to a stronger start.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Economy & Communities Analyze Your Utility Bills
What was the most interesting thing you learned from analyzing your utility bill? What are some ways you can save energy and water?

    Jody Tanori's avatar
    Jody Tanori 4/26/2023 4:57 PM
I always assumed that my power bill was based on time of day usage. It's actually a tiered billing. I called PSE to see if there are options on how I'm billed. There are not at this time, but they are looking into it. The gentleman I spoke with did also suggest options & resources to help me reduce my power consumption.

Since this challenge started I am so much more aware of my water consumption. Now, if I need to run the kitchen faucet for a minute or two while it gets hot, I fill a pitcher with the running water. If I don't use that water right away (for the coffee maker), I'll take it out to one of my watering cans to water the plants when ready. It's amazing how much water accumulates just waiting for the tap to heat up!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate & Ecosystems Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?

    Jody Tanori's avatar
    Jody Tanori 4/24/2023 10:09 AM
I took a friend to the local nursery and we looked at local pollinator friendly plants. I purchased several and will return next month for more. I'm hoping to attract more bees and hummingbirds. Can't wait to see the results! Not only are they fascinating to observe, but so beneficial to our environment and the crops we rely on for food.

How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

    Jody Tanori 4/22/2023 6:14 PM
The Heritage Park cleanup was a group effort & success. When we band together as a group, not only does the job get done faster, but it also bonds people together, creating a more positive experience & more appreciation for the work put into the project.

What was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?

    Jody Tanori's avatar
    Jody Tanori 4/20/2023 9:16 AM
While researching how to make my own cleaning products, I came across the article, " How to Avoid Buying Pet Products with Toxic Chemicals". I am amazed at the number of & kinds of toxic ingredients that make up dog toys! I had no idea! I will do better to be sure I'm not introducing these chemicals to my pets.

I installed a Rain Chain, not only to hear the beauty of running water during a rainfall, but to also capture water for watering my plants.
